MARCHING
INDIAN BAND
The marching band begins practice in July prior to the beginning
of school and continues through the end of football season.
Trips taken by the band usually involve the Marching Band
and may happen at any time during the school year. Summer
rehearsals and band camp are necessary to prepare for the
first ball game. Failure to attend band camp and/or regular
rehearsals may result in the student not performing with
the Marching Band. The band attends all varsity football
games and pep rallies as well as two or three marching contests
each year. Parade performances include the Homecoming Parade,
Dalton Veteran's Day Parade, Chatsworth Christmas Parade
and the spring trip. Rehearsals are held after school at
times designated by the band director. All members of the
band program are expected to participate in the Marching
Band. There are only three exceptions to this rule:
|
- A
student has a medical condition which makes it unsafe
for him/her to participate in marching band activities.
- A
student is involved in another school activity or sport
which is in season during the fall (e.g. cheerleading,
football, cross country, etc.) These students participated
fully in all band activities after the season for the
other activity has ended.
- A
student plays an instrument not traditionally associated
with marching band instrumentation (e.g. oboe, bassoon,
double bass, etc
- If
a student is granted on of these exceptions, he or she
must document 6 hours of individual practice per week
in order to satisfy the minimum grading requirements
of the band class.

BEGINNING
BAND
This is a new class for the 2009-2010 school year. This
class is for students with no previous instrumental experience
who desire to learn the fundamental techniques of playing
a wind or percussion instrument. Students in this class
will have individual practice requirements outside of class.
SYMPHONIC BAND
The band class for students in grades 10-12 is called the
Symphonic Band. This class is listed as "Advanced Band"
on each student's schedule. In addition to Marching Band
performances, students in this class perform at the Christmas
Concert, Spring Concert, District Seven Concert Festival,
a tour of Murray County Elementary schools and other events
as scheduled by the band director. Students will be enrolled
in Symphonic Band for both semesters unless there is an
unavoidable schedule conflict. In this event, the student
must be enrolled in the Symphonic Band class during the
SPRING semester. A student may not be involved with the
marching band without being enroll for at least one semester
of band class.
PEP BAND
This is an optional small ensemble for instrumentalists
who are interested in performing stands/pep music for events
such as basketball games. The instrumentation is the same
as regular marching band except for percussion, which will
mainly be handled by a drum set player.
JAZZ BAND
This is an optional ensemble for instrumentalists who are
interested in performing music written in the various jazz,
swing, and big band styles. The instrumentation for this
group is based on standard jazz band arranging: 2 alto saxophones,
2 tenor saxophones, 1 bari sax, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones,
guitar, bass, piano, and drum set.
COLORGUARD AND MAJORETTES
These are the visual ensembles of the Indian Marching Band.
They use motion, props and color to interpret the musical
performance of the group. Students must audition for these
sections.
WINTERGUARD
This is a competitive activity for which members of the
visual ensembles may audition. The Winterguard is involved
in several competitions during January, February, March
and April. There is an extra fee required for membership
in the Winterguard.
INDOOR DRUMLINE
This is a competitive activity available to all instrumentalists
(including wind players). Positions in the Indoor Drumline
will be determined by audition. The Indoor Drumline will
compete at the same SAPA events as the Winterguard. There
is an extra fee required for membership in the Indoor Drumline.

GENERAL
|
|
When
the members of a group have pride, maturity, class and style,
IT SHOWS. When the members
of a group are lacking these qualities, IT SHOWS EVEN
MORE! Remember, it takes much longer to build a good
reputation than to ruin one.
|
|
TARDINESS
|
- Be
in your place with your equipment ready to begin at
the designated start time.
- If
a student is late to an after-school rehearsal, he or
she will run one lap around the practice area for each
two minutes of unexcused tardiness.
- If
a student is tardy to class, he or she will be assigned
lunch detention in accordance with school policy.
|
|
UNIFORMS
|
|
Marching
band uniforms will be provided by the Band. Use of this
uniform is dependent on proper care of the uniform and payment
of band fees. Damage or loss to the uniform will result
in the student having to replace the damaged uniform part
or part. The
uniform pants will need to be hemmed in most cases. Do
not cut the uniform! Uniforms that are cut must be replaced.
Hems should drape to the tops of the shoes without "tenting"
or "folding."
Uniform
members will be assigned during band camp. After assignments
have been made, a quartermaster (student officer) will be
in charge of keeping up with these numbers. We will distribute
the uniforms before each performance and take them back
up at the conclusion of the performance or event.
Each
band member will have a band t-shirt. This shirt is part
of the uniform and required to be worn underneath the actual
band uniform. Failure to meet uniform requirements is ground
for disciplinary action which may include loss of 3rd quarter
break, loss of performance privilege or other action to
be determined by the band director.

brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable,
whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and
if anything worthy of praise,
